“The Transformers” turns 35 years today
Today is a very special day for the world of popular culture and the 80’s, as Hasbro’s “The Transformers” first started airing it’s popular animated TV series today, September 17th, way back in 1984! The show, made to coincide with Hasbro’s toyline of the same name - was a story about sentient an alien robot race known as “Transformers” that are split into warring factions - the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons. Living in the distant planet known as Cybertron, the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, were forced to flee from their home planet to seek other ways of defeating the Decepticons and their tyrannical leader Megatron. After a battle sends both groups crash lamding on prehistoric Earth, the robots lay in stasis until waking up in the present day - adapting to their surroundings by copying the forms of existing vehicles and machinery and becoming “Robots in Disguise”. As such, the war between both continues on Earth - with humanity involved and caught in the crossfires of the battle.
Since then, The Transformers has grown into a mega world franchise known to many people around the world. From the toys to the cartoons, the series has spawned multiple spin-offs, an animated movie following the events of the series, and even a series of live-action movies directed by Michael Bay. Truly they are more than meets the eye, and 35 years later they are legend. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY G1/ Generation 1!
