In January 2005, Writer extraordinaire Warren Ellis and a then up and coming art talent named Adi Granov teamed together and reinvented one of Marvel's flagship superheroes for the 21st century.
That hero was none other than Tony Stark, aka the Invincible Iron Man.
In the wake of Avengers Disassembled, the armored avenger's own flagship title was relaunched to coincide with the new beginning and direction the House Of Ideas was aiming for its top titles at the time. Of course, this meant introducing Iron Man to a whole new audience by concurrently reestablishing the character's origin and redefining the hero for the modern age. Thus, the "Extremis" storyline was conceptualized - a six part tale that depicts Tony Stark fighting a foe empowered by a nanotechnology super soldier serum known as Extremis, forcing the tech wonder to dive into the process itself, thereby giving him new powers and an upgraded suit of armor. The story also retcons Tony's past, portraying him as an arms dealer, and updating his origin by establishing his beginnings as Iron Man in Afghanistan instead of Vietnam. "Extremis" was received pretty well by fans and readers alike, and I enjoyed the heck out of it, especially with Warren Ellis' superb writing and Adi Granov's fantastic 3D lifelike artstyle. In fact, elements of the story, as well as Granov's art designs, were incorporated into the Iron Man film franchise, most notably with the first film in 2008.
Now, More than five years after its launch, Extremis is coming back better than ever, and just in time for the new Iron Man 2 movie's debut this May! The six part tale will be rereleased as a Director's Cut series for fans to catch up this April! Not only that, a new edition of the tale will be released digitally, with a Motion Comic adaptation under the Marvel Knights Animation banner, done and produced by the House Of Ideas themselves! As noted in a post in their website, the Iron Man Extremis Motion Comic will debut in April 16, with six episodes slated to be released on a bi-weekly basis until June! It will be available for download at iTunes, Zune, and Xbox, each episode costing $1.99, or for a whole season package price of $9.99! More details at Marvel.com itself, so click and read up! Excited yet? Iron Man Extremis gets Extreme this summer! Watch out for superior tech!
I liked Astonishing X-men. It redefined the merry mutant superheroes in a new way. Besides bringing Scott and the gang back to their superhero roots and spandex made outfits, it was the story that gave rise to new conflicts and issues within the mutant community, especially between Charles Xavier and his students. Also, Colossus returned, and was reunited with his old sweetheart Kitty Pryde, only to have their roles reversed with Kitty seemingly giving her life to save the world from destruction. Written by Buffy scribe Josh Whedon and illustrated by the talented John Cassaday, Astonishing was truly a signature series worth the price of admission, and if you're an X-men fan, you definitely have to take time and read this baby. In fact, a new opportunity has presented itself, and those tech savvy may want check this out.
For those who haven't heard, Whedon and Cassaday's seminal work will be making waves again via a rebirth in Motion Comics, which you can buy and download in iTunes! Just like Spider-Woman before it, the classic mutant storyline gets the new technology treatment, and Marvel.com has the full scoop on the story. Everyone who remembers the "Gifted" storyline may want to check out Cyclops, Wolverine, Emma Frost, and the gang kick it up a notch again, as they are reintroduced via juicy and remastered animated comic panels! Also, as part of the new release's promotion, Marvel presents a music video with some animated sequences from the new Motion Comic, and it's called "Rise Up". Now this caught my eye when I browsed Marvel.com this morning.
For a limited time, Marvel is screening the very first episode of the all-new Spider-Woman motion comics for free! Anyone of you who is a fan of Jessica Drew and her alter ego may want to check this out. It picks up right after the events of Secret Invasion, placing Jessica in a world that has a reason to hate her existence, even if it wasn't her fault to begin with. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and Illustrated by Alex Maleev, this new adventure finds Jessica trying to pick up the pieces of her life, and when a new opportunity comes and presents itself literally by her doorstep, it's time for Spider-Woman to come out and make her presence felt once more.
Curious? Take a looksie at the video link.
Hmmm... The story is pretty slick for a Bendis written tale. It's one of the rare moments where I actually prefer to see this series told in this format rather than be published in comic form. It looks so damn good that Alex Maleev's artwork gets the motion treatment, I'm practically begging to see more sexy Jessica Drew goodness in the next couple of episodes. Unfortunately, all of these will only be available and on sale at iTunes, so better watch the first episode now while it's still there. Remember, LIMITED TIME ONLY! Make it fast!
