Todd Phillips Joker sequel officially gets a release date, as the director and Warner Bros. have set "Joker: Folie à Deux" for a October 4, 2024 release in the US - Five years after the release of the 2019 psychological drama film that won the Golden Lion at the 76th Venice International Film Festival as well as Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Original Score.

Based on the character of the same name from DC Comics and the Batman universe, "Joker" took things in a different spin and cast Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck - a failed stand up comedian who eventually spirals into insanity and madness in 1981 Gotham City that inspires a counter culture revolution come the end of the movie. The sequel will see Phoenix returning to the role, with musician and actress Lady Gaga confirmed to join the cast.

The news of Joker 2's release date was first broken by The Hollywood Reporter.

One of the darkest and most disturbing psychological thriller films based on one of the most recognizable DC Comics villains is officially getting a sequel, as Todd Phillips confirma with an Instagram post that he is officially working on a sequel to his 2019 movie “Joker”, with his star and actor Joaquin Phoenix set to return as the titular character also known as Arthur Fleck - a role that nabbed him “Best Actor” at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Also winning the prestigious “Golden Lion” award at the 76th International Film Festival, “Joker” was meant to be a standalone film and has no ties to any other existing DC or Batman films, but Phillips has now confirmed he is working on the sequel - with the working title in the script being called “Joker: Folie à Deux”. 

A pic of Joaquin was also shared reading the script too.

It remains to be seen when shooting will start or what the details of the follow-up will be - but hopefully we’ll know more soon.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, "Joker" has nabbed the "Golden Lion" award from the annual film fest this Saturday - adding another feather to its cap and yet another prestigious accolade that makes it one of the most anticipated films everyone is looking forward to next month! The unlikely comic book movie that tells the origin story of Batman's greatest nemesis is directed by "The Hangover" and "War Dogs" helmer Todd Phillips, and stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck - a failed stand up comedian and clown who is caught in the turbulent times of 1981 Gotham City, driving him to insanity and leading him to the path of becoming the Clown Prince of Crime the city will soon fear.

Phillips commented and thanked "Warner Bros. and DC for stepping out of their comfort zone and taking such a bold swing on me and this movie." Making good on his work to tease the upcoming standalone film that will see Joaquin Phoenix taking on the role of DC's villanous clown prince of crime, The Hangover and War Dogs director Todd Phillips has shared a brand new photo from the set of "Joker" - the standalone DC Film that is separate from the shared DC Extended Universe and which will see the origins of Batman's greatest adversary told in a new way.  Todd shared the new image via his Instagram - with the message "Editing" clearly spelling out that post production work is currently underway.

Joker is scheduled for release on October this year.

"The Hangover's" Todd Philips is directing, with Phoenix set to star as Batman's archnemesis - showing a man who is disregarded by society and eventually becomes The Dark Knight's greatest adversary.

No release date has been given for the untitled Joker spin-off film.
