In 1995 - one of the most controversial and popular video game franchises got a live action film to its name - MORTAL KOMBAT. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and based on the fighting game series of the same name created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, the movie dealt largely with the plot of the first game - where a group of martial artists battle in a tournament that will decide the fate of Earthrealm.
“Mortal Kombat “(1995) Official Trailer
Despite the simple plot, slight deviations from its source material, and the campy comedic moments and dialogue it had, the movie became number at the box office at the time it was released - earning over $122 Million worldwide and becoming a cult classic and is arguably considered one of the better video game based films of all time.
With a cast led by Robin Shou as Liu Kang, Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage, Bridgette Wilson as Sonya Blade, Talisa Soto as Kitana, Christopher Lambert as Rayden, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung, Mortal Kombat was a hit thanks to primarily to its martial arts performance, faithfulness to the main story, and that amazing techno song that serves as the theme song that’s catchy to listen to this day.
Techno Syndrome (Mortal Kombat)
With a cult following that’s still active to this day, the Mortal Kombat film stands as a perfect example of how to adapt a video game concept and make it into a movie. Despite getting a horrible sequel (Mortal Kombat Annihilation *cough cough*), the film’s legacy was enough to influence the modern era of Mortal Kombat games by NetherRealm Studios - with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa reprising his role as Shang Tsung for Mortal Kombat 11!
If you haven’t seen this movie, or the animatronic Goro, you absolutely need to. Go and watch it... FIGHT!
Released this past weekend during this year's New York Comic Con and reminding people that this will be the "Final Chapter" for the franchise that deviated from the games but maintained its own action packed continuity, Sony Pictures, Screen Gems, and director Paul W.S. Anderson have released the second trailer for "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" - which sees Milla Jovovich reprising her role as Alice and looking to take down the Umbrella Corporation and its mutated bio monstrosities that have all but destroyed the Earth once and for all.

It seems Capcom is having a big 2012 with all things Resident Evil (also known as Bio Hazard in Japan). Not only do we get a trailer for the next movie starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, but also one for a NEW GAME slated for release at the end of this year, and it stars none other than the main male leads of the series, Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy! Thanks goes toKotaku and Comic Book Movie for the news!
Via her official Twitter account and through posts in Shock Til You Drop and Comic Book Resources, Milla Jovovich has updated fans with a video what's going on in the set of her next Resident Evil movie, Resident Evil: Retribution. Once again directed by her hubby director Paul W.S. Anderson, the film picks up where the last one left off, with Milla's character Alice and her friends trying to finish off the Umbrella Corporation and its biological experiments once and for all, gaining new friends and allies who are familiar faces to those who've played the games (like yours truly). In fact, Shock Til You Drop has the video from Ms. Jovovich up which brings a close look at Retribution from Behind The Scenes, giving us our first look at Boris Kodjoe returning as Luther from Afterlife and the movie version of one Leon S. Kennedy, star of Resident Evil 2 and RE 4 who is going to be played by Johann Urb (also known as Sasha from Rolan Emmerich's2012).
Resident Evil Retribution: Behind The Scenes and first look at Leon S. Kennedy
According to the Wikipedia profile of Retribution, Leon from Retribution is described as "the leader of the Resistance, who teams with Alice as she battles the Umbrella Corporation and the swarm of undead.". A far cry and distant version from the Leon I know and idolize from Capcom's Biohazard/ Resident Evil games, and the only similarities I see are the brown jacket and the name (which don't look like Leon's to begin with). Like I said of the past Anderson RE movies and as a big fan of the gaming franchise alone, this is totally different and I'm taking this as a separate entity unrelated to the source material. Clearly this isn't the Leon we all know from Resident Evil 4, so all I'm hoping is it delivers some worthy popcorn action at least. For more info, visit the source post at Milla's Twitter or the posts at Shock Til You Drop and CBM.
Resident Evil: Retribution delivers more zombie apocalypse action on September 12, 2012.
