Benedict Cumberbatch talks working with Sam Raimi in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

As Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe closed one chapter with the end of WandaVision last week, all eyes are turned to the future and the inevitable return of Benedict Cumberbatch as the Master of the Mystic Arts himself, Doctor Stephen Strange. We know Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff/ Scarlet Witch will be appearing alongside the good doctor in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" next year, and Stephen himself has been confirmed to appear in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" at the end of this year.

While details are definitely being kept mum, Collider was able to speak with actor Benedict Cumberbatch during an online interview, and while the English actor didn't reveal anything he did speak highly about working with the director of the Doctor Strange sequel, former Spider-Man Trilogy director Sam Raimi!

"Sam, amazing. He's so collaborative. God, he comes with the baggage of an icon. He's an incredible force, especially in this genre. But he's so humble, he's so nice, he's so appreciative, you really wanna serve him. And boy, when he's happy, you know you've done something right. He's so good at getting you there and getting it there. It's been a very, very collaborative process, this one. Our origin stories, I guess, and obviously the beasts that were the Avengers films to be a part of were a thrill, but you're kind of just along for the ride. You do the best with what you've already got given to do. The second time around, there's a bit more of, 'So, what do you want to do, and how do we go about solving this?' So it feels very creative. Scarily so, sometimes."

Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Doctor Strange in Tom Holland's third Spider-Man film, MCU Phase 4 explores the Multiverse

Looks like the Impossibilities are indeed endless in the growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, as The Hollywood Reporter just released the scoop that Benedict Cumberbatch will return to play Doctor Strange in Tom Holland's next Spider-Man movie! The untitled sequel, which is reported to begin filming this month, will be a continuation of "Spider-Man: Far From Home" and see Holland back as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man - whose identity was publicly revealed by Mysterio at the mid-credits scene of that film.

Doctor Strange's inclusion in the new MCU Spider-Man film follows a trend that began with "Spider-Man: Homecoming" in 2017 - when Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/ Iron Man served as a mentor figure to the young and inexperienced wall crawler superhero. That continued with 2019's Far From Home, with Nick Fury (or his Skrull proxy Talos) guiding Peter in his adventures in Europe and against the elementals of Mysterio. Now it's Stephen Strange's turn... And one has to wonder how the Multiverse fits in? With "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" also set for Phase 4, the interconnected nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands even further, and now Jamie Foxx's recent casting as Electro - a role he played in 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2", will now make sense in the grander scheme of things that opens up alternate realities and parallel worlds. We'll just have to wait and see how that plays, and whether Strange will do a "One More Day" to help Peter with his "secret identity not secret anymore" problem.

The Third Spider-Man film by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios is slated for a December 2021 release date, but that could change given the pandemic situation still affecting the world.

ICYMI: Scott Derrickson shares video of Benedict Cumberbatch entering a comic book shop as Doctor Strange

He may not be directing the sequel anymore, but Scott Derrickson will forever be the man who helmed the very first "Doctor Strange" film - introducing the Master of the Mystic Arts into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and having "Sherlock" TV Series star Benedict Cumberbatch play the alter ego of Stephen Strange. While Marvel Studios is moving forward with the follow-up in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness", Derrickson still keeps busy with other projects - and took time in his twitter to share an awesome moment back when they were shooting the first film in location at New York.

Via Scott Derrickson's Twitter, Benedict Cumberbatch - in full character as Doctor Strange - enters a comic book shop and literally the magic and conversations happen.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is tentatively slated for a March 2022 release.

The director to one of the most anticipated Marvel Movies that make up "Phase Three" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe just tweeted an image of his lead actor looking mighty "Supreme" as Doctor Strange, but that was just fanart and nothing official.

The line comes from the song "Burning Down The House" by Talking Heads. What that alludes to is anyone's guess, but maybe Derrickson has a reveal in store very very soon.
