Tim Burton's Batman Turns 34 Years Old Today

With Michael Keaton back as Batman in theaters thanks to "The Flash", it's also time to celebrate yet another anniversary in the film that got him started as the Caped Crusader in the first place - Tim Burton's Batman!

Released in cinemas on June 23, 1989, "Batman" was literally a game changer in the superhero movie genre as much as it was bringing the character back to his darker roots. Featuring an all-star cast headlined by Jack Nicholson as The Joker, Keaton as Bruce Wayne/ Batman, and Kim Basinger as Vicky Vale, this film is a must watch and something that fans of The Dark Knight absolutely need to see. In fact it was because of this film and 1992's Batman Returns that made Michael Keaton such an iconic choice to play the DC Comics superhero, and his return in The Flash this year marks the first time in over thirty years he plays the character again - and he's still got it!

The film has taken in an 85% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and sees the DC Extended Universe open up to the wider reaches of the DC Multiverse as Ezra Miller returns as Barry Allen/ The Flash, with both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton reprising their respective versions of Bruce Wayne/ Batman and Sasha Calle playing Kara Zor-El/ Supergirl.

Here's the press release straight from Warner Bros. Philippines, and you can also read my review on the film here.

Beetlejuice 2 Set For September 2024, Michael Keaton Returns and Jenna Ortega Joins the Sequel

Once again… IT’S SHOWTIME!

Michael Keaton will be teaming up with director Tim Burton again to reprise one of his signature roles once more, as Warner Bros. Discovery has officially announced that “Beetlejuice 2” is a go and will hit theaters on September 2024!

As reported by Deadline, The sequel to the 1988 horror fantasy comedy will see Keaton back as the “Ghost with the Most”, and also joining him will be his co-star Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz as well as “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega - who will play Lydia’s daughter!

For fans of Michael Keaton, this is another comeback role following his return as Batman in this year’s “The Flash”. It was because of “Beetlejuice” that Keaton and Tim Burton developed a working relationship that led to his casting as the Caped Crusader, and Burton also spearheaded “Wednesday” on Netflix which starred Jenna Ortega as the lovable and creepy member of The Addams Family.

The Flash Movie Promo Art Features Supergirl, Michael Keaton Batman, and Two Flashes

2023 has a full slate of blockbuster movies coming up - and one of them is expected to help “reboot” the very troubled DC Films slate of movies and presumably end the DC Extended Universe as we know it. That movie of course is “The Flash” - which will feature controversial star Ezra Miller in the titular role as well as Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck returning as their respective versions of Batman.

Now a new promo image has been released featuring Supergirl, Batman, and two Flashes - which is making the rounds online and hopefully helps build up momentum for the movie. The first trailer is expected to debut during this year’s Super Bowl this February, and that’s a long time coming for a film that’s supposed to debut in the middle of this year.

The Flash hits theaters this June.

ICYMI: Batgirl Director Shares Image of Leslie Grace Suited Up Alongside Michael Keaton as Batman

In the aftermath of the cancellation of Batgirl by Warner Bros., one of the film’s directors in Adil El Arbi took to Instagram Stories to share an image of the shelved superhero movie - which features Leslie Grace suited up and alongside a returning Michael Keaton as Batman.

Definitely what could have been.

Batgirl Gets Shelved By Warner Bros. Discovery, Will Not See Release

Looks like the new owners and management of Warner Bros. Discovery are clippinng the wings of what would have been the nearly finished “Batgirl” movie starring Leslie Grace in the title role. The film, which was due for either an HBO Max or theatrical release, has been shelved by the studio due to it being “irredeemable” according to a report by the New York Post, and that means that the $70-100 million movie won’t see the light of day at all.

The superhero film, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah of “Bad Boys For Life” fame, would also have included Michael Keaton reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/ Batman and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. How it fits into the DC Extended Universe or DC Multiverse as a whole we’ll never get the chance to know - as plans have clearly changed with WB’s priorities and management restructuring.

Happy 70th Birthday, Michael Keaton aka Batman '89!

Turning 70 and still delivering some awesome acting roles is one thing, but how about getting to play the superhero role that many fans remember you for once more next year? That's pretty much what birthday boy and Batman 1989 actor himself Michael Keaton is, and he's done a lot of stellar work in Hollywood - from playing the Caped Crusader in two Tim Burton directed Batman films as well as Beetlejuice before that with the same director. He was also nominated for his performance in Birdman, and would also get to play The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Now he'll be coming back next year to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/ Batman in The Flash movie starring Ezra Miller, and the DC Films adventure will open the multiverse doors and feature Ben Affleck's Batman as well!

Happy Birthday Michael Keaton!

The Flash movie director Andy Muschietti teases Michael Keaton's Batman with bloody Batsuit

It movies director Andy Muschietti is pretty busy directing Ezra Miller's solo superhero film "The Flash" -- which will feature the return of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/ Batman from the 1989 movie of the same name, and to tease that return we get an image from his Instagram that sees the familiar classic Batsuit looking very much like how The Comedian's badge was splashed with blood. The film will also see Ben Affleck's Batman return as well, though how he fits is still a mystery.

What the bloody '89 batsuit means we won't know until the film comes out, but it might be a sign of bad things... Maybe a Crisis among other things.

The Flash is scheduled to be released on November 4, 2022.

Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton return as their respective Batmans for “Flashpoint”

Batfans who have been looking for a sign or miracle that two former Batman actors would officially reprise their roles have gotten their prayers answered, as Variety reports that Ben Affleck AND Michael Keaton are returning as their respective versions of Batman for director Andy Muschietti’s “Flashpoint”! An adaptation of the 2011 alternate timeline Flash centered storyline that set up the DC Universe reboot initiative in “The New 52”, the film will see The Flash - once again played by Ezra Miller - making a time travel decision using the Speed Force which will seemingly impact the DC Films universe... And in some way traveling the DC Multiverse (as seen in the Arrowverse) where he’ll be encountering these two Batmen.

Affleck, who last played Batman/ Bruce Wayne in “Justice League”, will be returning the role for the first time since stepping away from starring and directing “The Batman” - which went on to Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves respectively. Michael Keaton has been heavily rumored to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/ Batman from “Batman” and “Batman Returns”, & now that’s officially confirmed too.

In the story by Variety, Muschietti said about Ben Affleck’s Batman and his relationship with Ezra Miller’s Flash:

“His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong, which is his masculinity—because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline —but he’s also very vulnerable,” Muschietti said in an interview. “He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.” Affleck got the script at the end of last week and agreed this week to join the project.

“He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before,” the director added. "It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.” “I’m glad to be collaborating with someone who has been on both sides of the camera, too,” Muschietti said. “He understands.”

With DC FanDome happening this weekend, we can expect more DC Films news and other exciting announcements to happen! Flashpoint is expected to be released on June 2022.

ICYMI: Batman/ Batman Returns easter egg spotted for "Crisis on Infinite Earths"

Looks like Batman and DC Universe fans are going to be VERY PLEASED if this shot from the Instagram account "Crisis_On_Infinite_Earths" holds any weight to it!

Reportedly spotted at the set of the upcoming DC on the CW crossover sharing the same name as the 1985-1986 DC Comics crossover event series that reshaped the comic universe, a the front page of the "Gotham City Gazette" newspaper reveals "WayneTech CEO -Bruce Wayne to Marry Socialite Selina Kyle" on the front page - and it features Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne as seen in Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns! As fans very well remember - Keaton played the Caped Crusader in those movies and had a romance with Michelle Pfeiffer's Selina Kyle/ Catwoman. Could Warner Bros. and The CW be bringing the actor back in the iconic role aside from this easter egg? Guess we'll find out soon enough!

Crisis on Infinite Earths begins on the Arrowverse this fall!

Tim Burton's Batman was released 30 years old today

It's been a while since I blogged here... But no perfect time to make a return like TODAY when one of the greatest movies in popculture, comic book, and cinema history was officially released in theaters this day.

In June 23, 1989, Warner Bros. released "Batman" - their first live-action cinematic foray into the Batman movies franchise based on the DC Comics superhero of the same name. Directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton in the titular role as Bruce Wayne/ Batman, this masterpiece ushered in one of the definitive interpretations of the Caped Crusader as we know him - a dark and brooding vigilante who dons a Bat costume and fights criminals at night in the streets and rooftops of his home turf Gotham City. Opposing him is the talented Jack Nicholson as gangster Jack Napier - who turns into the freakish and insane Clown Prince of Crime known as The Joker after a battle leaves him scarred and his entire body completely bleached in white after falling in a vat of chemicals. Supporting performances by Kim Basinger as Vicky Vale, Michael Gough as Alfred, and Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon only brought more conviction and energy into this production - and the rest is film history.

Batman (1989) Official Trailer #1 - Tim Burton Superhero Movie
Batman 1989 is a timeless classic that exists because of the direction comic book stories such as "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" and "Batman: The Killing Joke" did to bring the character back to his darker roots. This film would serve as the template for future Batfilms - with an immediate sequel following in 1992 with "Batman Returns" by Burton, then two more not so stellar follow-ups in "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin" years later by Joel Schumacher. It was not until 2005 when The Bat would see another triumph in the form of "Batman Begins" by director Christopher Nolan - leading to a renaissance of the character because of that reboot and its sequels that make up the equally legendary set called "The Dark Knight Trilogy".

That being said, this is a celebration of Burton's film and even after 30 years - it still holds up as one of the DEFINITIVE Batman works. From the direction and impressive score by Danny Elfman to the perfect casting and even Prince's soundtrack that included the "BatDance", this is a movie fans must watch. HAPPY 30 YEARS TO "BATMAN" and onward as we continue celebrating the Caped Crusader's 80th Anniversary this year!
