Iron Man 15th Anniversary: Reminiscing About the Marvel Studios Film That Started the MCU!

“I Am Iron Man”!

15 years ago, “Iron Man” was released in theaters - and it was the Marvel Studios movie that not only made Robert Downey Jr. into Tony Stark and the Armored Avenger, but jumpstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it today! Directed by Jon Favreau, this superhero movie was instrumental in turning the then B-list Marvel superhero into a household name, and with his own solo film began “The Infinity Saga” - which played out in three phases that lead to the formation of the Avengers and introduced more heroes that converged to fight against Thanos as he wielded the might of the Infinity Stones!

As someone who saw it in theaters when it opened in April 30, 2008 in the Philippines (it opened on May 2 of that year in the US), I can’t believe we’ve come this far with the MCU and how this film has stood the test of time and remained one of my favorite superhero movies! I’ve collected toys, books, souvenirs, and yes even the poster from the film - and it remains timeless parts of my collection to this day.

Happy Birthday to Iron Man, Robertt Downey Jr.!

While the world is dealing with trying times right now, we still honor and celebrate some important special days - including the birthday weekend of one of the most talented and prolific actors of the modern age, Robert Downey Jr.!

Celebrating his 55th birthday this April 4th, the man is a perfect example of a guy who literally turned things around and made a comeback in his life and Hollywood career, with his most memorable role being the Armored Avenger himself - Iron Man! Playing the lead role of Tony Stark, he's been at the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2008's "Iron Man", serving as the figurehead that rallied up the rest of the superheroes and being one of the founding members of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers. Through the course of ten films, RDJ's portrayal and character evolution as Iron Man has gained a lot of fans and given the character new recognition and prominence in popculture - as well as making the ultimate sacrifice to save the world and bring back the heroes lost to Thanos in last year's "Avengers Endgame". In fact, last year's D23 Expo saw a little "We Love You 3000" Iron Man poster drawn by the one and only Ryan Meinderding - a fitting tribute to the legacy of the character who began the MCU!

(Marvel) Tony Stark | You can rest now

Beyond the role of Iron Man, RDJ is also quite busy with other endeavors and roles, having just starred as Dr. Dolittle in this year's "Dolittle" and possibly returning as Sherlock Holmes in a new sequel film alongside Jude Law. However, he's slated to play the role of Tony Stark/ Iron Man again and make an appearance in the upcoming "Black Widow" solo film headlined by Scarlett Johansson.

Happy Birthday, RDJ! We Love You, 3000!

Marvel Studios' "Iron Man" was released 11 years ago this day

"I Am Iron Man."

Through those words and the cinematic origin story told by Marvel Studios, a former B-Lister Marvel Comics superhero and founding member of the Avengers turned into a global blockbuster sensation in 2008. A gamble to usher in a cinematic universe with a returning and sober Robert Downey Jr. paid off, as Tony Stark and the Marvel Cinematic Universe was born and the very first "Iron Man" film directed by Jon Favreau was released on this day 11 years ago!

With the world bracing for the release of one of the most anticipated films this year and over a decade's worth of Marvel films telling one cohesive and epic journey, Marvel Studios and Disney have gathered the cast and crew of "Avengers: Endgame" for the obligatory Press Conference at Los Angeles to answer questions and deliver whatever they can reveal on what's coming for the 22nd film by Marvel Studios. In fact, a set of photos have been release from the official Avengers Facebook page revealing The Russo Brothers together with their superstar cast - including Chris Evans/ Captain America, Robert Downey Jr./ Iron Man, Brie Larson/ Captain Marvel, and everyone else!

Gwyneth Paltrow announces that she's retiring as Pepper Potts in the MCU

Looks like it truly is time for some of the familiar personalities of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to move on following whatever the events of Avengers: Endgame brings, as Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Gwyneth Paltrow has chimed in through Variety that she is planning to retire her Marvel Cinematic Universe character of Pepper Potts - the love interest and former secretary of Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.

“I mean, I’m a bit old to be in a suit and all that at this point. I feel very lucky that I did it, because I actually got talked into it. I was friend with [‘Iron Man’ director] Jon Favreau. It was such a wonderful experience making the first ‘Iron Man’ and then to watch how important it has become to fans.”

In the article, Paltrow didn't completely close doors and said could come back for a cameo or flashback.

"I feel honored to be a part of something that people are so passionate about,” she said. “Of course, if they said, ‘Can you come back for a day?,’ I will always be there if they need me.”

First appearing in 2008's Iron Man, Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper has been the heart and conscience beside RDJ's Tony, always counter-arguing his eccentric nature and willing to lend his boss/ boyfriend the support she can give him during his adventures as a superhero. She eventually becomes the CEO of Stark Industries while Tony is busy as the armored avenger, and eventually is proposed to by Stark and currently engaged during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. We'll find out soon enough if she will be in "Rescue" mode or otherwise when Avengers: Endgame hits this April.

Marvel Studios' "The Art of Iron Man: 10th Anniversary Edition" hits this October

It's hard to believe that it's been more than 10 years since Marvel Studios and director Jon Favreau took a gamble to jumpstart the Marvel Cinematic Universe with "Iron Man" - but it certainly paid off in spades and helped reignite the career of Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. - who plays the titular character and his alter ego Tony Stark. As the heart of the MCU, RDJ and Iron Man have helped carry and connect all films of the MCU all the way to its long awaited convergence film in this year's "Avengers: Infinity War" - so it's only fitting that Marvel is going to celebrate a decade's worth of the Armored Avenger's first solo flick by releasing a 10th Anniversary edition of "The Art of Iron Man"!

As detailed in Amazon, the new release will be packed with exclusive content - from director Jon Favreau's vision in creating the film to bringing the Iron Man armor to life with the help of Stan Winston Studios! It sounds like a surefire collector's item piece for Iron Man fans - and this book will be released on October 9, 2018 and will retail for about $55.

Throwback Thursday: Iron Man turns 55 years old this year

As March winds down to a close and the world prepares for Holy Week proper, this final Throwback Thursday is perfect to revisit and celebrate the 55th Anniversary of one of the most iconic and popular superheroes in comics - The Invincible Iron Man! Apparently on this very month in 1963, Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby debuted the armored alter ego of Anthony "Tony" Stark on the pages of "Tales of Suspense #39". After suffering a chest wound and being abducted by terrorists who force him to build a weapon of mass destruction, Tony instead builds a powerful suit of armor that helps him escape his captors. Upon returning home, the experience changes him and he decides to become a superhero - adopting the name "Iron Man" and going through several adventures that sees him augment the armor over the years and become a founding member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes - The Avengers.

As the character's popularity soars to this day in comics and other forms of media, Iron Man is also the "heart and soul" of Marvel Studios' "Marvel Cinematic Universe" - with Robert Downey Jr. having played the role of Tony Stark and his heroic alter ego since the eponymous superhero film debuted ten years ago in cinemas. As Avengers: Age of Ultron prepares to hit theaters in less than a month - we should be thankful the Armored Avenger helped pave the way for superheroes to be celebrated as they are today! Happy 55th Anniversary, Iron Man!
