ICYMI: McFarlane Toys reveals first look at Batman: The Dark Knight Returns wave with BAF Horse

 

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's critically acclaimed Batman story "The Dark Knight Returns", and what better way to honor that DC Comics masterpiece than McFarlane Toys producing a new set of figures based on it for its DC Multiverse line of action figures?

As part of its New York Comic Con 2021 celebration showcase, the Toddfather has revealed our first look at the entire wave of The Dark Knight Returns 7" figures - comprised of 4 characters in Batman, Carrie Kelly Robin, The Joker, and Superman... With the Build-A-Figure being none other than the horse an older Bats rides during the third act of the story!

Expect these figures to arrive sometime down the line!

If there was any indication that Deadpool 2 was a big success - it's pretty clear now thanks to Rotten Tomatoes which certified the sequel "Fresh" (with a pic above featuring Cable stating it's the "Best Sequel since the Godfather Part II" lol) and the film getting a worldwide box office gross of $301 Million! That's pretty impressive numbers, and something that is detailed via Superherohype as well if you want the specifics.

Throwback Thursday: 30 Years of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns...

About 30 years have passed since one of the most important and genuine works in comic book history, The Dark Knight Returns, burst into the picture and brought back something that was sorely lacking for a time... A Batman who was, for all intents and purposes, THE DARK KNIGHT. Putting together a story of an older Bruce Wayne who was well past his prime yet still burning with the desire to make a difference and stand against crime and injustice, Frank Miller set the bar in depicting a Batman that not only embraced his mission again, but also returned to his dark roots and didn't hesitate to instill fear and intimidation to those who preyed on the innocent.

Published as a four issue miniseries beginning in February 1986, The Dark Knight Returns forever changed the landscape of comics as we knew it then and how we know it now. It not only defined Batman for a generation and inspired his portrayal in several mediums and films like Tim Burton's Batman films and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, but it also serves as the DIRECT INSPIRATION behind the upcoming DC Films' epic "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", where Ben Affleck plays a more hardenered, older, and experienced Batman than anything depicted in film.

In fact, the regular Batsuit and Batarmor were inspired by The Dark Knight Returns, and taking on Supes is directly lifted from the last chapter of that graphic novel saga, "The Dark Knight Falls".

With a new sequel series currently running in Dark Knight III: The Master Race, attention and focus is clearly directed at this classic and its influence on BvS. We'll just have to wait and see what happens on March 25th between the Last Son of Krypton and Dark Knight on film, but for now we honor 30 years of TDKR... Jim Lee reveals his variant cover to "Dark Knight III: The Master Race"

Showing off his entry into what is already an amazing collection of variant covers for what is literally the newest and most ambitious sequel to one of the most legendary Batman stories of all time, DC Comics co-publisher and artist extraordinaire Jim Lee shared via his Facebook page his variant cover to "Dark Knight III: The Master Race" - which shows a wounded Batman straight from the climactic fight scene he has with The Joker, only with new protege and sidekick Carrie Kelly aka Robin by his side inside a cave.

Dark Knight III: The Master Race is scheduled to be released on November 25.

As one of the most influential Batman stories AND graphic novels of all time, The Dark Knight Returns certainly is getting all the attention thanks to the coming of a new sequel in Dark Knight III: The Master Race this November and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in March 2016. In fact, next year is the 30th Anniversary of the four-book series... And DC Comics had a panel just for the occasion for last weekend's New York Comic Con.

Jim Lee presents Scott Williams' variant cover take on "Dark Knight III: The Master Race"

With the release date coming up to one of the most hyped up sequels of this year, Jim Lee's official Facebook page has shared the first look at Scott Williams' stellar looking variant cover to "Dark Knight III: The Master Race" - the final chapter to the epic Dark Knight Returns saga by Frank Miller.

Drawn in a style reminiscent of Lee's work and showing that his work as the artist's long time collaborator and inker paid off, Williams' take shows of Batman and Carrie Kelly's Robin as they soar through the rooftops of Gotham City, in a piece that is a direct nod to 1986's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns". It is one of SEVERAL variant covers for the new Batman story, set in a future where Batman has come out of retirement to once again make a stand and fight for justice.

After months of teasing and build up that a new sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed comic book graphic novels of all time was coming this year, DC Comics has officially announced that legendary comic writer Frank Miller will be returning to helm a new chapter in the futuristic "Batman: The Dark Knight" saga by writing "The Dark Knight 3: The Master Race" - an 8-issue miniseries that he'll be co-writing alongside fellow comic scribe Brian Azarello.

The new book is the second sequel to Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns", which was released in 1986 and featured an aged Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement and donning the cape and cowl once more as Batman. The four-issue masterpiece returned the Caped Crusader to his dark roots, and helped bring the character to new ground that saw his popularity spike. The book would eventually have a sequel in "The Dark Knight Strikes Again", which was released in 2001.

No word yet on who will be the artist for "The Dark Knight 3: The Master Race", but the series is expected to be published twice a month and released on Fall 2015 in time for the 30th anniversary of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, which inspired the Batman films - including The Dark Knight Trilogy and the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Batman Vs Superman: Ben Affleck as Batman & Batmobile Prototype Model revealed

As promised via his official Twitter account and after teasing a whopper yesterday, Zack Snyder has pulled the tarp and revealed the surprise... Which does not only include a new looking Batmobile to be used in his upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel "Batman Vs Superman", but also the very first look of Ben Affleck as Batman.

As reported by Snyder's Tweet and seen in Comic Book.com, the new costume is clearly a nod to The Dark Knight Returns, which of course is the classic Frank Miller storyline that features an older Batman coming out of retirement and fighting crime once more.

This Batsuit is similar to the second suit Bruce Wayne dons in that alternate futuristic story, and Mr. Affleck here is wearing sports a shorter cowl, and has a body suit that almost looks more comic accurate and greyish in nature with the "classic retro The Dark Knight Returns" logo mounted on his chest.

On related news and also from Comic Book.com, Blue Realm Studios via Twitter has also revealed the look of the Batmobile itself, via a prototype sculpture that minus the wheels has the body. Put two and two together, and you have your smooth new Bat-ride, which is clearly inspired the Arkham games and Burton films versions of the iconic ride of the Caped Crusader.

Batman Vs Superman is currently in production and will be released on May 6, 2014.

Last weekend's New York Comic Con was filled with tons of popculture news that gave a lot of reason to look forward to next year, and none could contest that things would shine brighter in the corner of a certain Dark Knight hero! DC Comics very own Batman is getting two animated films in 2013 in the form of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 and Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Superheroes Unite! Due to be released in DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital Download this Wednesday, Warner Bros. has released another clip teasing its upcoming new DC Universe Original Animated Movie, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1. Focusing on an older Bruce Wayne's (voiced by Robocop alum Peter Weller) return to the cowl after a 10-year absence, this epic alternate reality story on the Caped Crusader is based on the same 1980's graphic novel by acclaimed writer Frank Miller. New stills and premiere dates for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Animated released

Via a post at Superherohype, new stills from the next DC Universe Animated Original Movies release, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Animated. The new animated feature based on Frank Miller's 1986 seminal graphic novel work of the same name is due for release on home video on September 25th, but it will also be getting an advanced premiere on two coasts in the United States, namely New York and Los Angeles. Filmmakers and cast members will be present on those dates, with panel discussions open to fans and viewers attending! Via MTV Geek News, the very first trailer for the upcoming new DC Universe Animated Original Movie "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1" has arrived! Based on Frank Miller's seminal graphic novel masterpiece that helped return the Caped Crusader to his dark roots, the story unfolds in a future where an aged Bruce Wayne has retired from the cape and cowl for a decade, only to see himself return as The Dark Knight when Gotham City is plagued with more crime and threats than ever before. DC Teaser: DC shows off Batman's look in Detective Comics #1!

Revealed in their post via their blog The Source, DC Comics has posted this image of Batman and revealed where one of the one-liners they teased will originate from... in the all-new Detective Comics #1 by Tony S. Daniel! The one liner associated with this fantastic art piece is "He's the worst kind of killer. One with no true pattern". Also, we finally get a glimpse of how Daniel, along with guest artist Ryan Winn, will illustrate his Dark Knight in his run, and the new look appears to be a hybrid of Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" look with "Batman Inc."! The Dark Knight Rises: Tom Hardy as Bane voices out to Gotham!

Comic Book Movie featured this VERY INTERESTING post of a sound bit straight from the mouth of Tom Hardy, aka Bane in The Dark Knight Rises! In this clip posted in YouTube, we hear Hardy's very first lines as Bane, who addresses Gotham with a proclamation! Of course, you can consider this an actual SPOILER, so take heed with the warning! And if you want to know where that line came from and more, it's set during a scene being filmed in Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, where a mock football game being filmed for the movie is taking place, between the "Gotham Rogues" are taking on the "Rapid City Monuments". As you can guess, Bane invades the joint, and proclaims to Gothamites to "Take Control" of their city! Check out the clip below from a person who was in the scene and uploaded it to YouTube.

Pretty interesting updates here. Finally, we hear how Tom Hardy will sound as Bane, but there might be a possibility that it will go through  some changes in post-production. SDCC '11: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns confirmed as a DC Animated film!

Fans of DC's ever growing animated film line up may get the surprise of their lives next year, as Warner Bros. and DC pretty much confirmed during the San Diego Comic Con that one of the most beloved Batman stories would be getting the toon treatment... As a two-parter even!

That's right, Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's The Dark Knight Returns is being adapted! The EPIC tale of an aged Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement and returning as Batman in a distant future is going to be made into DC's next animated film sometime in 2012. The Dark Knight Returns will most likely be released after the two animated movies slated for launch within the year, which are Justice League: Doom and Superman Vs. The Elite. Not much details were given on who will be voicing who, but good rumor and word is that legendary Batman: The Animated Series actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are being considered for Batman and Joker again, and if that's true, things will be so much more AWESOME going for this movie.

Coincidentally, this will be Frank Miller's second Batman work adapted into an animated film, as Batman: Year One already saw its premiere held at the Comic Con and will see home video release later this October! For more details on the store, visit the source post over at Bleeding Cool!
