Ben Affleck steps down as director of "The Batman"
Looks like the upcoming solo film of the DC Extended Universe won't be seeing its Dark Knight star and actor taking the director's chair, as Variety reports the unfortunate news that "Argo" and "The Town" director Ben Affleck has decided to step down as director of the Batman solo film tentatively titled as "The Batman".
In the story by Variety, Affleck went on to say why he decided to back peddle and step away from directorial duties, which was officially confirmed during last year's San Diego Comic-Con.
“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
There you have it. This is probably for the best as constant pressures of being asked about updates do weigh in on Ben, as does having to direct, write, and star in productions he makes. Affleck is still set to star and be a fellow driving force behind the film and the DCEU. His latest film, Live By Night, was released in theaters on Christmas before hitting theaters worldwide on early January. His next appearance as Batman will be in this November's "Justice League".

Star Wars: Episode VIII title officially revealed as "The Last Jedi"
With the release of the first spin-off film in "Rogue One" now in the rear view mirror, Star Wars fans have turned their attention to the impending release of the next numerical installment in the franchise... And that is Episode VIII. Thanks to the official Star Wars Facebook page, we now have a title to that chapter, and that is "Star Wars: The Last Jedi"!
Via the official FB post itself, the description reads as:
"We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy. In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI.
THE LAST JEDI is written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski."
From the title alone, it sounds like Episode VIII will deal with the Jedi legacy - specifically Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill), who was last seen at the end of The Force Awakens and found by Rey.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released in December 2017.

Marvel announces "Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider" for April
After being revealed as the newest incarnation of The Jackal during the events of the currently ongoing "The Clone Conspiracy" storyline, returning Spider-Man clone character Ben Reilly is set to officially embrace his roots and adopt his Scarlet Spider persona once more as Marvel reveals "Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider" - a new ongoing that features the already announced team of writer Peter David and artist Mark Bagley.
Featuring a new costume that is decidedly mixed in elements and opinion (see Bleeding Cool), Ben Reilly's return to his Scarlet Spider identity won't be a fully heroic one, as he is still set to wrestle with his demons coming fresh from his other persona of The Jackal. " Even Peter David, through an interview with Comic Book Resources, gave a pretty apt description of his thoughts writing the character:
"He has his Scarlet Spider identity on one shoulder, urging him to follow his better angels, and the Jackal on the other hand, trying to get him to return to the path that led him to disaster. He’s trapped in the middle, endeavoring to balance the two. Of all the characters I’ve written who are having identity problems — and God knows, I’ve done a few — Ben is easily the most unhinged."
Reilly won't be the only one highlighting the book, as his brother and other Scarlet Spider Kaine will be there too as a supporting character. How this comeback will affect Peter Parker/ Spider-Man is still a mystery, but expect Ben to swing back into the webs when "Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider" hits shops and newsstands this April!

Marvel announces "Secret Empire" event for 2017 featuring Captain America
After recently releasing a trailer that detailed the new Hydra status quo of one reinvigorated yet tainted Steve Rogers, Marvel Comics has released an image of what appears to be their next big event storyline called "Secret Empire" - which puts Captain America in the middle of things as in the current "Captain America: Steve Rogers" comic book - he is an Agent of HYDRA who is manipulating things from behind the scenes and is working to a big endgame. Reported by Bleeding Cool, it's still up in the air as to how this event will play out in the bigger Marvel Universe, but as CBR points out the term "Secret Empire" also harkens to a division of HYDRA that has existed in stories before... And this new division could be Hydra Cap's own brainchild to put his plans in motion.
No release date has been given for Secret Empire, but expect it sometime in 2017 for sure.

Marvel releases "Hail Hydra" launch trailer for Captain America: Steve Rogers
2016 has certainly left a lot of shockers and unexpected things in its wake... And one of those in the popculture and comic scene was the big switcheroo that happened in the pages of the new series "Captain America: Steve Rogers" - which puts the newly restored Steve Rogers back in the uniform and wielding a new shield, but also with the revelation that he is an agent of Hydra. Anyone who follows the Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz series knows that this was due to the machinations of the Red Skull - who manipulated the sentient Cosmic Cube entity known as Kobik to restore Rogers but also implant new memories of his past being laced with a history of being raised by the evil organization he fought since World War II.
Now Marvel has released a new trailer to promote the new storyline "Hail Hydra" starting with issue #7 and #8 - which brings readers and followers of the series up to speed and also teasing what the future may bring for Cap as he puts his own plans in motion.
Captain America: Steve Rogers is currently ongoing and published by Marvel Comics.

Michael Keaton talks why he didn't do "Batman Forever"
Despite long being past the shadow of his former tenure as the Caped Crusader of the big screen, many fans still see Michael Keaton as one of the definite actors to have portrayed Batman in film. With his career revitalized thanks to his brilliant performance in "Birdman" and then "Spotlight", the actor is now set to tackle the Marvel Cinematic Universe by playing the villainous Vulture in "Spider-Man Homecoming" this July.
However, one question that has finally been answered is why Keaton decided to hang the cape and cowl and not return as Batman for Joel Schumacher's "Batman Forever". In an interview with THR (and reported by Comic Book.com), the actor revealed he knew he had to leave before things turned ugly as the director had a different outlook at how to do the next Batman film after Tim Burton's two films that came before it.
"It sucked. I knew it was in trouble when he said, 'Why does everything have to be so dark?'"
As it is, Batman Forever went on to cast Val Kilmer as the new Bats, while the sequel Batman and Robin saw George Clooney in the role when Kilmer didn't return. Well, we all know how the Schumacher films turned out... We can all move on and put that to rest now.

Ben Affleck won't do "The Batman" if the script doesn't come together
Although he committed to writing, directing, and starring in the upcoming solo movie of the Caped Crusader in the DC Extended Universe, Batman actor and Academy Award winning movie director Ben Affleck has stated in an interview with The Guardian that he will not force the tentatively titled "The Batman" if things and the script don't come together.
“That’s the idea. But it’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it.”
It's quite understandable for Affleck to be weary of things and prioritize quality than making a subpar product come out. Given his resume with "The Town", "Argo", and this month's "Live By Night", the director is first and foremost a filmmaker who wants things to come together nicely. His portrayal as Batman in last year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" was one of the highlights of the film despite the mixed reviews from critics and fans, and the actor is set to reprise the role later this year with Justice League. Let's hope things do come together to meet the projected target release date of 2018.
