DC Comics The New 52: Gail Simone off Batgirl

In what may be the most shocking comic book news to date, comic book writer and Batgirl scribe Gail Simone is now off Batgirl... And she didn't leave the book of her own accord to boot.

The news, stemming from comic book news site Bleeding Cool and confirmed by Gail herself via her own Twitter, sees the high profile writer of Batgirl taken out of the book, with issue #16 which concludes the "Death of the Family" tie-in being her last one .

This is very sad news indeed, especially since Gail has nurtured and written so many great stories featuring several of DC Comics' female heroes, namely the "Bird of Prey" series, Wonder Woman, and the new Batgirl series for DC Comics The New 52 initiative, which saw Barbara Gordon return to the role and recovering from her paralysis after being injured by The Joker during the pivotal "Batman: The Killing Joke" storyline. It was a controversial move as it removed Babs from her other definitive role as "Oracle", but Simone pulled things off with flying colors, and has won fans over since. In other media, Gail even penned one episode of the classic "Justice League Unlimited" cartoon series, "Double Date", which featured Huntress, The Question, Green Arrow, and Black Canary.

Initially the news was first reported by Bleeding Cool last week, and was thought to be debunked by Gail herself when she reaffirmed that she's staying with Batgirl and not leaving anytime soon. Sadly, that's been confirmed now, and the news is disappointing for loyal readers like myself. One can only hope Simone may return to the title or do something better soon.
