"Maniac" remake clip online showcasing Elijah Wood as serial killer Frank Zito

Prepare for something else from Elijah Wood, and it isn't looking pretty at all.

Better known to all as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Wood now presents in a more maniacal role quite literally in the remake of the 1980 film "Maniac" (similar to his role as Kevin in Sin City). Playing a disturbed shopkeeper turned serial killer named Frank Zito, the new adaptation of William Lustig's original slasher flick has an unspecified release date, and also stars Nora Arnezeder.

Check out a clip of this disturbing flick based on a cult horror classic, which sees release internationally soon. For more info, visit the source post at Coming Soon.

Movie Reviews: Fright Night, Contagion, and Horrible Bosses

I've seen a couple of movies this month, and I came out of each and every one them completely bewildered and satisfied thanks to the entertainment value, direction, and star power each one presented in their own right. I try to keep an open mind whenever I step into any type films, and regardless of what initial reviews featured on print media or the internet have to say, I'll still have to give my own two cents worth on the subject eventually when all is said and done. Right now, I have a couple under my belt that I've been itching to talk about, and while I may keep the reviews as brief and short as possible, I'll try to stick to the point and piece out what makes each one good in their own right.

Special thanks again goes to Warner Bros. Philippines for the screenings this month!

Bloodsport is getting a remake...

Looks like we'll be seeing a remake of a classic martial arts film... kinda.

According to a report from Screen Daily that was also posterd over at Slash Film, Philip Noyce of Salt fame is planning to remake the tournament fighter movie Bloodsport, which starred a then up and coming Jean-Claude Van Damme. However, instead of making it a direct remake, the plan is to have the movie follow the plot of "an American who goes to Brazil to recover from his experiences in Afghanistan, only to find himself competing in a martial arts tournament instead".

Bloodsport 1988 Trailer

This practically follows the same basic premise of "one man vs many fighters in a tournament" as the original Blooodsport, but it's drastically different in terms of plot. The original 1988 movie had Van Damme play true life American martial artist Frank W. Dux, who goes AWOL from the army to fight in an illegal underground tournament known as the "Kumite" in order to honor his Japanese master. It might be too early to tell, but I'm not feeling enthusiastic about the remake news at all. Heck, it has no star attached to it yet, and who can match the caliber of fighting/ presentation that JCVD and Bolo Yeung presented in the original? Looking Out For "Plan 9"...

Remaking a movie isn't a simple process. Not all of them do justice to their predecessors, and even if a few manage to squeeze out and shine through with a decent modernized plot, fans loyal to the source material still bear some love and attachment to the original. What a remake can do is add a new layer of twists and possibilities that weren't available thanks to limitations of technology during the time the original was made. A fair number of remakes were successful, with notable examples being Ocean's Eleven and Dawn Of The Dead, which reignited the love and attention fans gave to those respective genres thanks to new innovations and gimmicks that were introduced. The upcoming flick, Clash Of The Titans, is another remake that serves as proof of the many franchises Hollywood has retooled and represented as new movies for the modern age, and while it isn't the first classic to be reintroduced to the 21st century, it certainly won't be the last. Fan craving and demand has placed many favorable cult classics in the candidate list, and one in particular that caught my eye is this:

I found out that one of Ed Wood's classic sci-fi horror movies, Plan 9 from Outer Space, is getting the remake treatment! Cited as one of "the worst films ever made" the film told the story of aliens from outer space trying to stop humanity from creating a powerful weapon capable of destroying the universe, resorting to a ploy that involves resurrecting the dead and getting their attention. Yeah, that's the plot, and you can check out part one of the movie yourself, courtesy of You Tube, right through this embedded video, as well as the accompanying links:

Plan 9 From Outer Space

Heh, I vaguely remember seeing the original, made in 1959 and starring classic actors like the late Bela Lugosi (who died even before the original was released!). It's your classic bill of space horror that's too fun to ignore, and being a zombie fan myself, I'm open to seeing the new version, to be made by Darkstone Entertainment, just for kicks. Word got to me about the remake from a post by James Rolfe of AVGN fame, and he even has a part in this movie! Wow, with the nerd on board, as well as aliens and zombies causing mayhem,I'm even more excited to see this now! Check out the teaser trailer and see for yourselves how the new one will look like:

The V Effect Is Upon Us...

Independence Day. Mars Attacks. Marvel's Secret Invasion.

Meet one of the originals that started it all.

It's hard to imagine how one would react at the sight of an ginormous alien spaceship hovering above your city, but if it did happen, then you'd probably drop everything and stare into the sky much like the rest of humanity did in V.

A reboot/ remake of the same Sci-Fi television series that launched in the early 80's, this new version of V sports the same basic plot I grew up watching and reading about in television and comics as a lad: A group of extra-terrestrial Visitors suddenly appear out of the blue sky, making contact with humanity and ensuring the obviously bewildered species that they "come in peace". In the pilot, we are introduced to a number of characters, namely an FBI Agent named Erica Evans, her rebellious son Tyler, a priest named Father Jack Landry, and a businessman named Ryan Nichols, who hides a secret which could jeprodize the new life he wants to build with his fiancee, Valerie. Together with other supporting characters in the story, these people are caught in a situation wherein humanity is slowly starting to embrace the V's as saviors, thanks to the promise of advance technology and well being they will provide in the name of peace. Contradictions and questions about faith and trust are just some of the subtle themes this series uses effectively in channeling the fear and paranoia building up as those intuitive enough start to realize that the V's benevolent intentions have more sinister motives behind them. For the most part, I enjoyed the way the characters played out their roles and provided each other with emotional conflict and support. The aliens themselves look more angelic and less of a threat, thanks to their beautiful and composed appearances. Anna, the de facto leader of the V's, is eloquent and beautiful to a fault, and she uses her intelligence and charms to her advantage, effectively giving humanity enough reason to devote themselves to the visitors. Towards the end of the pilot, the key players begin their plans to form the resistance, but will their efforts be recognized or simply end in vain? That's what V is all about, and as contemporary retelling of a classic alien invasion story, this does a lot of wonders the average sci-fi buff will enjoy. Highly recommended.
