SPOILER: Set sightings of "surprise villain" for Iron Man 3

Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios have officially begun filming for their next heroic film adventure starring ol' shellhead with Iron Man 3, which is directed by Shane Black and once again sees Robert Downey Jr. return to the fold as Tony Stark/ Iron Man. Casting appears to be big for this new sequel too, as actors like Ben Kingsley, Andy Lau, and Guy Pearce have signed up and taken up roles that are either confirmed or still under speculation at this point. Whatever the case maybe, what is confirmed now is the appearance of a "surprise villain" that is sure to get fans of the armored avenger on a spin. SPOILERS contained in this post, so tread at your own risk!

Apparently, Iron Man and War Machine won't be the only armored characters appearing, as the Iron Patriot makes his official film debut for Iron Man 3! Via Comic Book Movie, set photos from the North Carolina Wilmington set have leaked online, showing the Iron Patriot armor being worn by a character being played by actor James Badge Dale. He's reported to be Eric Savin, aka the cyborg Coldblood, but he's wearing the Iron Patriot armor here, which could mean that it'll be another fusion of villains ala what Mickey Rourke did for his spin of Ivan Vanko, aka Whiplash in Iron Man 2 (which was also somewhat of a combination between the whip-totting villain and the Crimson Dynamo).

In the comics, the Iron Patriot armor was assumed by none other than Norman Osborn, who's better known as Spider-Man's insane nemesis The Green Goblin. In the aftermath of the 2008 crossover "Secret Invasion", Osborn took power and ousted Tony Stark as director of S.H.I.E.L.D, beginning his "Dark Reign" and replacing the worldwide security peacekeeping force with his own group, named H.A.M.M.E.R. To add insult to injury, Osborn created his own group of Dark Avengers, and assumed the identity of the "Iron Patriot", which was an amalgamation of Iron Man and Captain America.

Since Sony Pictures still holds the rights to the Spider-Man film franchise, Norman Osborn won't be appearing in the Iron Man films anytime soon. Still, it doesn't stop Marvel Studios from taking their own spin in the character, and set pictures already confirm this iteration of the Iron Patriot to appear in the film. More concrete details should pop up sooner than later, so in the meantime, check out more info via the source post at Comic Book Movie.

Iron Man 3 is expected to fly into theaters on May 3, 2013.
