After the shocking events of the mid-season finale of AMC's The Walking Dead, it's going to be a long and hard road for Rick Grimes, his son Carl, and their fellow survivors when they return from their hiatus come next month.
With that comeback looming on the horizon, AMC has released the Season 4 mid-season poster for the show, featuring father and son walking down a railroad and the words "Don't Look Back" painted right on the sky.
SPOILERS after the jump to discuss what took place and thoughts on what direction the protagonists are heading into.
After The Governor laid siege to The Prison and killed off old man Hershel Greene, Rick Grimes and his compatriots have been separated from one another, with Daryl Dixon and Beth going off one direction; Glenn and the bus full of survivors in the other; Maggie, Sasha, and Bob trying to follow the others; and Tyreese and Carol's kids running to find safety elsewhere. That leaves Rick and his son Carl on their own... And thinking that baby Judith was lost after finding a bloodstained baby seater left behind.
Much like the comics, the journey will focus on Rick and Carl trying to survive by themselves after the devastation and loss of their home, and maybe somewhere down the middle they'll regroup with Daryl and the others. Rick Grimes' actor himself Andrew Lincoln has stated on an interview that Chandler Riggs, aka Carl Grimes, literally "steps up" and gets more spotlight time in this season, so that makes the rest of Season 4 interesting to look forward to, as well as what new dangers besides the undead apocalypse may lie ahead. While The Governor 's fate in the mid-season finale "Too Far Gone" was pretty much sealed, the character's actor David Morrissey has been coy as to whether or not he may "return". We'll just have to see where else the journey goes.
