Now this can be taken with a BIG Grain of Salt since this is a rumor... But it's pretty interesting to say the least for a casting choice on
Warner Bros. and
DC Entertainment's upcoming
Man Of Steel sequel for 2015, the yet untitled "
Batman Vs Superman" movie that now has
Wonder Woman in it!
With plenty of rumors abuzz suggesting that other heroes and villains may appear in the upcoming superhero film, the one lingering and interesting theory was that Academy Award Winning actor
Denzel Washington would be up for a role in the film, and early reports suggested he'd be an African-American version of
Superman's eternal arch-nemesis,
Lex Luthor.
That doesn't seem to be the case now however, as a new scoop according to Nuke The Fridge and posted by
Screen Rant suggests that Mr. Washington may not play a villain, but rather a hero... And that's
Green Lantern John Stewart!
Now fans of
DC Comics know that John Stewart is one of Four very well known human Green Lanterns in the
DC Universe (Five now if you count The New 52, but that's another story). As one of Hal Jordan's substitutes/ replacements, Stewart has a background in engineering and serving in the US Marines, which fit quite well in his role as a member of the intergalactic police force called the
Green Lantern Corps. He's also been one of the most prominent members of the Justice League, serving as a core member of the team while
Hal Jordan was absent or unavailable. In fact, John Stewart is a founding member of the League in the
DC Animated Universe, and his presence is as iconic in many ways there as it is in the comics.
John Stewart's Green Lantern oath
With this rumor in the open, it would be really nice to see John Stewart in the spotlight and him being The Green Lantern for this "Batman Vs Superman" movie with Wonder Woman... WHich may very well turn out to be A
Justice League movie after all.
I would have imagined a different or younger African-American actor like
Idris Elba playing the role besides Denzel Washington, but the Hollywood star is a proven talent (not to mention Elba being signed in as Heimdall in Marvel's Thor movies), and would bring credence to the role if he indeed were chosen. Either way, these are still rumors... But interesting ones to ponder about should they be confirmed or true somewhere down the line.
Also on an interesting note... December 28 also happens to be Mr. Washington's Birthday! Happy Birthday, good sir!
The yet untitled "Batman Vs Superman" movie is slated for July 17, 2015.
