It comes with a heavy heart to share the news that Randall Mario Poffo, better known to the world as "Macho Man Randy Savage", died as a result of a car accident. Reported first by TMZ and eventually coming to popular search engines like Yahoo!, the 58-year-old wrestler reportedly suffered a heart attack while driving his jeep in Tampa, Florida, losing control of his vehicle and hitting a tree head-on. Macho Man then succumbed to his wounds upon arriving at a local hospital. The rest of the report on this tragedy can be read on TMZ or Yahoo! News.
No words can describe the sense of mortality and grief I'm feeling over this sad news. I grew up idolizing Randy Savage as a kid, and his matches and promos were some of the best the wrestling industry had to offer, particularly during his tenure with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now known as WWE or World Wrestling Entertainment) and the now defunct World Championship Wrestling. Like the rest of the world, we'd find ourself mimicking his catchphrases, even going so far as to shout of "OOOOOOOOOHHHHH YYYYYEEEEAAAAAA" or flexing imaginary muscles in the manner of his infamous "Macho poses". His marriage to "Miss Elizabeth" Hulette was one of the most memorable storied pairings/ marriages in professional wrestling history, and he even had his share of appearances in media and film, including Sam Raimi's ever popular 2002 movie adaptation of Marvel's Spider-Man, where Savage played Crusher Hogan, a wrestler whom a newly powered Peter Parker fights in a wrestling show for the prize money. His last genuine appearance was promoting the Xbox 360/ PS3 game "WWE Wrestling All-Stars", where his younger self and other legendary wrestlers fight the new breed of talents, in a mixed generation, cartoony styled wrestling game!
It's still hard for me to accept the news properly that another popular icon from my childhood has passed on, but we can only pray that he's in a better place now. R.I.P Macho Man, and keep on shining up there with Miss Elizabeth and the rest of the legends who are with you... OOOOOOHHHHH YYYEEEAAAHHHH!!! I leave you all with this classic interview segment from WWE's past featuring the Macho One himself...
